The Olympics: Ten Years Ago and Today

Ten years ago I was in my first year of teaching and the 2002 Winter Olympics took place in Salt Lake City.  One of the most memorable parts of that school year was doing an Olympic theme in my classroom for a couple of weeks.  I was lucky to be paired with a creative special ed teacher that year, someone who is still one of my closest friends today.  Together we came up with the following ideas.  Please excuse the picture quality.  They were taken with the first digital camera I owned, printed on a regular printer, and then retaken with my current camera.

Collecting tickets and passing through the metal detector as we board the airplane that will take us to the games.  I was in charge of security and was also the captain.

 Luge Presentation

 Slalom Competition

Each child took a turn as torch bearer, a.k.a. line leader

I can't remember who this woman was, but she brought in an official torch to show the class!

Ten years later, I am no longer teaching in a classroom but still finding ways to have fun with my own kids.  Today we made our own torch and a crown of olive leaves.  Kira was allowed to stay up a little late to watch some of the opening ceremonies.  We're looking forward to watching the upcoming sporting events!
