Advent Activities 2012 - Part 1

This year we our continuing our tradition of counting down to Christmas by doing a special activity each day in December.  Logan is old enough to understand that we look inside the little mittens each day to retrieve the paper that will show us what we are going to do.  The kids take turns counting from 1 to the current day and pulling out the paper.  Here is  a run down of what we did the first half of the countdown:

December 1: Christmas Craft - Grandma and Papa helped the kids make paper trees the morning before Kira and Logan's birthday party.  Papa clearly didn't have as much experience as Grandma in leading crafts and using Elmer's glue.

December 2: Holiday Train Show - We went to the Fairfax Station Railroad Museum to see their Christmas train displays.  They also had trains running around the exterior of the small museum and an actual caboose that we were able to explore.

December 3: Christmas Cupcakes - It was a beautiful December day so we went to Georgetown to meet Aunt Liane for lunch and get cupcakes at Georgetown Cupcakes.

December 4: Decorate Christmas Tree - We watched the movie, White Christmas while we decorated the tree.  This has been a tradition for me since I was a little girl.  Both kids really enjoyed watching the dancing scenes.

December 5: Tiny Tots Concert - We attended this concert at my old high school and had front row seats!  I figured out that I sat on that stage playing the flute in the same concert 16-19 years ago.  That really made me feel old.  Grandma was able to join us for this fun event.

December 6: Christmas Dance Party - A new addition to the dance party this year were dancing ribbons and a disco ball.  The ribbons broke within 24 hours but the disco ball is still going strong!

December 7: Baby Jesus Birthday Party - We went to church for this party sponsored by the MOPS group.  The kids listened to a story, did a craft, sang carols, and had cake!

December 8: Elf Express - We rode the VRE train with our friends, the Yangs.  This was Logan's first train ride and he really enjoyed it.  Santa visited the kids while on the train.

December 9: Train Snack and Polar Express - The kids really liked the movie and enjoyed a fun snack made out of graham crackers, reddi whip, and m&m's.

December 10: Gingerbread Houses - We decorated gingerbread houses with Elliot.  I have many fond memories of doing this fun craft with my students every December, along with Alexis, Elliot's mom (we team taught).

December 11: Decorate Christmas Cookies - The kids decorated sugar cookies with Grandma.  Kira had fun but Logan was the one really loved this activity.  He is now starting to talk in sentences and would say things like, "I want the green one!"  Emma was staying with Grandma and Papa that week so she observed and ate a cookie.

December 12: Make Fudge - This activity was with Papa and was something I used to do with him when I was younger.  I think it was the only thing he was capable of making.  We had to start the process twice due to expired evaporated milk and made quite a mess when we spilled half a bag of m&m's on the floor.
